EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored engraving, titled "Ornithologie: Sapho sparganurus, Radiosus, Trochilus, et Dacelo Concretus" and created by Fournier after an illustration by Edouard Travies for Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle (Universal Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris in 1849, showcases two captivating bird species: the Red-tailed Comet, Sapho sparganurus, and the Rufous-collared Kingfisher, Actenoides concretus. The Red-tailed Comet, also known as the Long-tailed Sappho or the Long-tailed Hummingbird, is depicted perched on a branch with its vibrant, iridescent plumage on full display. The male's elongated tail feathers, which give this hummingbird its distinctive name, are particularly prominent in this illustration. The Red-tailed Comet is native to South America and is known for its agility and nectar-feeding habits. The Rufous-collared Kingfisher, on the other hand, is shown in a more dynamic pose, with its wings spread wide as if preparing for flight. This striking bird is identified by its rufous collar, black and white plumage, and bright orange-red bill. The Rufous-collared Kingfisher is a resident of Southeast Asia and is a fish-eating bird that hunts by perching above the water and diving to catch its prey. Both of these birds are beautifully rendered in this exquisite hand-colored engraving, which showcases the intricate details of their plumage and the naturalistic setting in which they are depicted. The illustration is a testament to the artistry and scientific accuracy of the time, providing a glimpse into the natural world of the mid-19th century.
