EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant front cover of The Queen, The Ladies' Newspaper & Court Chronicle, published on January 26, 1901, reports the sad news of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Victoria. Four days had passed since her death at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, at the ripe age of 81. The image used on the cover was taken during one of her last public appearances, in April 1900, while she was visiting Ireland. The Queen is seen wearing full mourning attire, her face etched with the signs of old age and the weight of the heavy crown she had worn for over 63 years. The somber black clothing and the solemn expression on her face reflect the mood of the nation as it came to terms with the loss of its beloved monarch. This publication, along with countless others, played a significant role in reporting the event to the British public and the world, marking the end of an era in British history.
