EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Roman Emperor Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, also known as Nero, who ruled the Roman Empire from 37 AD to 68 AD. The image is a copperplate engraving taken from "De Roomsche Monarchy," a comprehensive work on the Roman Monarchy published in Utrecht, Netherlands, in 1697 by Francois Salm. The engraving was created by Abraham Bogaert. Nero, the fifth son of Emperor Claudius, was a complex figure in Roman history. He was known for his exuberant personality, artistic talents, and his infamous persecution of Christians. This portrait, however, presents a more reverent and holy image of the emperor. Nero is shown wearing the imperial diadem and a toga, with a laurel wreath resting on his head. He is depicted with a serious expression and a calm demeanor, holding a scepter in his right hand and a token coin in his left. The image of Nero as a saint, or "Henricus Sanctus," is an intriguing anomaly in the historical record. This representation of Nero as a saint is not widely recognized in modern scholarship, but it was common in some European artistic and literary traditions during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The exact origins of this depiction are unclear, but it may have been influenced by the fact that Nero was a direct ancestor of the Holy Roman Emperor Henry II (1227-1254), who ruled the Holy Roman Empire from 1220 to 1254. This portrait offers a fascinating glimpse into the complex and multifaceted nature of historical memory and the ways in which it has been shaped and reinterpreted over time. The image of Nero as a saint is a testament to the enduring power of artistic and literary traditions to shape our understanding of the past.
