EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite chromolithograph depicts the legendary encounter between the Roman goddess Diana and the mortal shepherd Endymion. The scene is beautifully rendered on this Plaque, produced by the renowned English potter Josiah Wedgwood and Company in 1898, under the artistic direction of Frederick Rathbone Old Wedgwood. Diana, the goddess of the hunt, is shown in her full regalia, wearing a flowing gown adorned with the pelt of a stag and carrying a bow and quiver. She is depicted in a moment of tender affection as she leans over Endymion, who lies asleep on a bed of flowers. According to myth, Diana fell in love with Endymion and asked Zeus to grant him eternal youth and beauty, allowing her to visit him each night. The intricate details of the Plaque are a testament to the artistic skill and craftsmanship of the Wedgwood Company during this period. The use of chromolithography, a printing technique that allowed for the production of detailed and vibrant images, brings the mythological scene to life. The Plaque is also a fine example of the decorative and artistic ceramic work produced by Wedgwood during this time, combining both functionality and aesthetics. This Plaque, with its timeless beauty and captivating story, is a treasure of Roman mythology and a reminder of the enduring allure of classical art.
