EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by David after an illustration by Jean-Gabriel Pretre for Bernard Germain de Lacepede's Natural History of Oviparous Quadrupeds, Snakes, Fish and Cetaceans published in Paris in 1825, captures the majesty of two of the world's most endangered marine mammals, the North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) and the fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus). The North Atlantic right whale, with its calligraphic, wavy lines and intricate details, is depicted on the left side of the image. This critically endangered species, with only around 400 individuals remaining, is easily recognized by its distinctive square fluke and large, bulbous head. On the right side of the engraving, the fin whale, the second largest animal on Earth, is gracefully depicted. With its long, slender body and distinctive fin, this endangered species can reach lengths of up to 70 feet and weigh as much as 70 tons. The fin whale, which was once hunted relentlessly for its oil and meat, is now protected under international law. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving not only serves as a testament to the artistic skill of the time but also highlights the importance of conservation efforts to protect these magnificent creatures and prevent their extinction. The North Atlantic right whale and fin whale, along with many other marine species, continue to face numerous threats, including habitat loss, entanglement in fishing gear, and climate change. It is crucial that we continue to raise awareness and take action to ensure their survival for future generations to enjoy.
