Mlle. Josephine Duchesnois as Alzire in Voltaire's Alzire, performed at the Theatre Francais in Paris in 1813, is depicted in this stunning handcoloured lithograph by F. Noel. The image is based on an illustration by Alexandre-Marie Colin Lavigne Marin from the collection "Portraits d'Acteurs et d'Actrices dans différents rôles." Mlle. Josephine Duchesnois (1787-1851) was a renowned French actress of the Romantic era, celebrated for her beauty and emotional depth. In this production of Voltaire's classic play Alzire, she embodied the title character, a noblewoman who falls in love with her captor, a native American chief.
