This handcoloured steel engraving, titled "Migratory Locusts and Eggs, Locusta migratoria (Gryllus migratorius)," is an exquisite example of natural history illustration from the 19th century. It was created by the renowned German naturalist and publisher, Georg Friedrich Treitschke, for his "Gallery of Natural History," or "Naturhistorischer Bildersaal des Thierreiches," in Leipzig, Germany, in 1842. The image showcases two stages of the life cycle of the Migratory Locust, Locusta migratoria (Gryllus migratorius). The adult locusts are depicted in various poses, their vibrant, iridescent exoskeletons a striking contrast against the muted background.
