This stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Mango, fruit and section, Mangifera indica," is a beautiful example of the exquisite botanical illustrations found in Jussieus Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator, Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), and engraved by Schmeltz. Turpin is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and ability to capture the true essence of the plants he depicted.
