EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph showcases two exquisite species of Madagascan butterflies: the Madagascan sunset moth, Chrysiridia rhipheus, and the pan hairstreak, Electrostrymon pan. The image, taken from John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn in London in 1837, is a testament to the natural beauty and diversity of the unique insect fauna found on the island of Madagascar. The Madagascan sunset moth, also known as the urania sunset moth, is a large and striking insect with vibrant orange and black wings adorned with intricate patterns. The male and female of this species can be distinguished by their wing markings: the males have a more elaborate pattern on their hindwings, while the females have a more uniform orange coloration. These moths are primarily found in the dry forests of western Madagascar. The pan hairstreak, Electrostrymon pan, is a smaller butterfly with bright green wings edged in black and white. The males have distinctive white "hair-like" markings on their forewings, which give them their name. These butterflies are found in the rainforests of eastern Madagascar. The intricate details and vibrant colors of these butterflies are beautifully captured in this 19th-century lithograph, which showcases the remarkable natural history of Madagascar's unique insects. The handcoloring adds an additional layer of detail and depth to the already stunning illustrations, making this a true work of art.
