EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph, taken from John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn in London in 1837, showcases four exquisite species of moths: the Imperial Moth (Eacles imperialis), the Gray-banded Zale (Zale squamularis), and the Black Zale (Zale undularis). The Imperial Moth, depicted in both its ventral and dorsal views (1 and 2), is a large and impressive moth with a wingspan of up to 15 centimeters. Its forewings are adorned with intricate patterns of gold and black, while its hindwings are a striking gold color. The Gray-banded Zale (3), on the other hand, is a smaller moth with a wingspan of around 5 centimeters. Its forewings are a rich brown color with distinct gray bands, while its hindwings are a paler brown. The Black Zale (4) is another small moth, with a wingspan of approximately 4 centimeters. Its forewings are a deep black color, while its hindwings are a lighter shade of gray. These beautiful moths were meticulously captured and illustrated during the 19th century, a time when the study of exotic insects was a popular scientific pursuit. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this handcoloured lithograph serve as a testament to the skill and dedication of the naturalists and artists of the time. Today, these moths continue to fascinate and inspire us with their unique beauty and intricate designs.
