EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking handcoloured lithograph depicts Honore Gabriel Riqueti, Comte de Mirabeau (1749-1791), a pivotal figure in the French Revolution. Mirabeau is shown here in the costume of a deputy to the Estates-General, an assembly convened in May 1789 to address the deepening financial crisis facing the French monarchy. Mirabeau's eloquent speeches and political acumen earned him a prominent role in the early stages of the Revolution. He was a key figure in the formation of the National Assembly, which would eventually adopt the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen. Mirabeau's influence extended beyond the political sphere, as he also played a significant role in the military campaigns of the Revolution. Tragically, Mirabeau's health began to decline in 1791, and he died under mysterious circumstances in the Tuileries Palace in Paris. This beautiful lithograph, taken from the portfolio "Costumes Historiques de la France" by Paul Lacroix, published by Le Bibliophile Jacob in 1852, captures the essence of Mirabeau's historic role in the French Revolution and offers a glimpse into the fashion and style of the late 18th century.
