Francois Annibal d'Esteres, (1573-1670): A Prominent Figure in French Diplomacy and Military This handcoloured lithograph depicts Francois Annibal d'Esteres, a French diplomat, soldier, and Marshal of France. Born in 1573, d'Esteres rose to prominence during the late 16th and early 17th centuries, serving both King Henry IV and King Louis XIII. D'Esteres began his career as a soldier, serving in various campaigns under Henry IV. His military prowess and leadership abilities soon caught the attention of the king, who appointed him as a Marshal of France in 1615. However, d'Esteres' talents extended beyond the battlefield. He also served as an ambassador to the courts of Spain and the Holy Roman Empire, playing a crucial role in maintaining diplomatic relations between France and these powerful European powers. The portrait shown here is after a painting by Jean Valdor, as published in Le Bibliophile Jacob's Costumes Historiques de la France in 1852. D'Esteres is depicted in the full regalia of a Marshal of France, complete with a plumed hat, a flowing red cape, and a sword at his side. The handcoloured lithograph adds an extra layer of detail and vibrancy to the image, making it a striking representation of this important figure in French history. D'Esteres continued to serve France in various capacities until his death in 1670. His military and diplomatic accomplishments solidified his place in French history as a skilled and dedicated servant of the crown. This handcoloured lithograph serves as a visual reminder of his significant contributions to French diplomacy and military might during a pivotal period in European history.
