EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored engraving, created by Fournier after an illustration by Blanchard for Charles d'Orbigny's Universal Dictionary of Natural History published in Paris in 1849, showcases four distinct species of scarab beetles: the Giant Dung Beetle (Heliocopris gigas, or Copris isidis), the Giant Amazonian Carrion Scarab Beetle (Coprophanaeus lancifer, or Phanaeus lancifer), the Egyptian Scarab Beetle (Scarabaeus aegyptiorum, or Ateuchus aegyptiorum), and their respective males and females. The Giant Dung Beetle, also known as the Giant Ball-rolling Dung Beetle, is a remarkable insect native to Africa, renowned for its ability to roll dung balls for nesting sites. The Giant Amazonian Carrion Scarab Beetle, found in Central and South America, feeds on decaying organic matter, playing a crucial role in the decomposition process. The Egyptian Scarab Beetle, an iconic symbol of ancient Egyptian culture, is depicted in this engraving as both male and female. The males are characterized by their large, convex foreparts, while the females have a more rounded, flattened body shape. These beetles were revered in ancient Egypt for their role in the cycle of life and death, as they were believed to symbolize the dung beetle god Khepri, who rolled the sun across the sky each day. This intricately detailed and beautifully colored engraving offers a glimpse into the natural world of the past, showcasing the diverse and fascinating world of scarab beetles.
