EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, created by Victor Steeger based on an illustration by Geremia Discanno, showcases some of the most exquisite architectural elements discovered in Pompeii. The ancient Roman city, buried under volcanic ash and pumice during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, has since been meticulously excavated, revealing a wealth of intricately decorated buildings and structures. The image features two columns, the one on the left hailing from the Casa di Caccia Antica, or House of the Ancient Hunt (VII.IV.48), and the other from the Domus M. Asellini, or House of Adonis (VI.VII.18). The former boasts a Corinthian capital adorned with intricate carvings of animals and foliage, while the latter showcases an Ionic capital with elegant scrollwork. The columns are flanked by a magnificent head of Oceanus, the Roman god of the sea, which was discovered in the Domus M. Holconi Rufi, or House of Holconius Rufus (VIII.IV.4). The decorative cornices that grace the top of these structures further highlight the grandeur and sophistication of Pompeian architecture. This stunning representation of the ancient city's architectural beauty serves as a testament to the artistic achievements of the Roman civilization and the enduring allure of its rich history.
