EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handfinished chromolithograph by Henry Noel Humphreys, based on an illustration by Jane Loudon from her book "Mrs. Jane Loudon's Ladies Flower Garden of Ornamental Perennials," published in London in 1849, showcases a beautiful collection of Claytonia and stonecrop species. The illustration features the Carolinian Claytonia, or Claytonia caroliniana, and the Virginian Claytonia, or Claytonia virginica, both native to North America. These delicate plants are characterized by their heart-shaped, pink or white flowers and fleshy, kidney-shaped leaves. Surrounding the Claytonias are various stonecrop species. The houseleek-like stonecrop, or Sedum semper-vivoides, is easily recognizable with its succulent, rosette-like leaves and small yellow flowers. The ternate-leaved stonecrop, or Sedum ternatum, boasts three-lobed leaves and pink or red flowers. Lastly, the blue-flowered stonecrop, or Sedum caeruleum, is distinguished by its vibrant blue flowers and fleshy, oblong leaves. This exquisite lithograph not only showcases the unique beauty of these plants but also highlights the exceptional artistic skills of Humphreys and Loudon. The intricate details and vivid colors bring these plants to life, making it a must-have for any botanical art enthusiast or gardening aficionado.
