This poignant photograph captures US Cemetery Marker Number 1 at St. Mere Eglise in Normandy, France. Established in the aftermath of the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944, this cemetery was one of the first permanent burial sites for American soldiers who lost their lives during the invasion.
