EDITORS COMMENTS
Calisaya, scientifically known as Cinchona calisaya, is depicted in this stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving from Dr. Willibald Artus's Handbook of all medical-pharmaceutical plants, published in Jena, Germany, in 1876. The Calisaya tree is a member of the Rubiaceae family and is native to the Andes mountains in South America. It is widely recognized for its medicinal properties, particularly in the production of quinine, an alkaloid used to treat malaria. The engraving shows the Calisaya tree in its natural habitat, with its distinctive oval-shaped leaves and bright red flowers. The tree is depicted with several branches bearing the characteristic red, round fruits, which are also used in traditional medicine. The intricate details of the tree's veins, bark, and flowers are beautifully captured in the handcoloured engraving, adding to its aesthetic value. Calisaya has been used in traditional Andean medicine for centuries, with the indigenous people of the region using various parts of the tree to treat a range of ailments, including fever, dysentery, and heart problems. The bark of the tree was traditionally chewed or made into a decoction to treat malaria, long before the discovery of quinine. The production of Calisaya liqueur, a popular digestive and aperitif, is also shown in the engraving. The liqueur is made from the fruits of the Calisaya tree, which are macerated in alcohol and sugar to produce a sweet, aromatic beverage. The liqueur was believed to have various health benefits, including aiding digestion and boosting the immune system. This beautiful handcoloured copperplate engraving is not only a testament to the medicinal and cultural significance of the Calisaya tree but also a stunning example of the intricate detail and artistry of 19th-century botanical illustration.
