EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the essence of Charles Buckham Fry (1872-1956), an extraordinary figure in late Victorian sports history. Known as C.B. Fry, he was a true all-round sportsman whose talents extended beyond cricket to football, rugby, athletics, and even boxing. Born in Taunton, Somerset, Fry made his first-class cricket debut for Somerset in 1892, at the age of just 20. His cricketing prowess was evident, as he went on to represent England in 10 Tests between 1896 and 1902. In this photograph, taken around 1897, Fry is seen in his element, poised at the crease with a bat in hand, ready to face the bowler. The lush, green grass of the pitch, the wicket, and his pads add to the authenticity of the scene. However, Fry's athletic abilities went far beyond cricket. He was also a proficient footballer, representing England in 11 international matches between 1896 and 1902. Fry's versatility and athletic prowess made him a crowd favorite and a true sports icon of the era. This photograph is a testament to Fry's enduring legacy as a cricketer and an all-round sportsman. The late Victorian era, with its emphasis on physical fitness and competitive sports, provided the perfect backdrop for Fry's remarkable achievements. This image, with its timeless appeal, continues to inspire and captivate audiences today, reminding us of the rich history of sports and the extraordinary individuals who have shaped it.
