EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts the Anthomedusae, a group of colonial hydrozoans commonly known as the "Gemmiferans" or "Medusae de Stylaster," named for their attachment to the stylaster coral. The illustration, created by Ernst Haeckel and beautifully rendered by Adolf Glitsch in 1904, showcases several species within the Anthomedusae genus, including Zanclea gemmosa, Koellikerina fasciculata, Neoturris pileata, Larsonia pterophylla, and Sarsiella dinema. The Anthomedusae Medusa, as seen in this print, exhibit a unique morphology. They possess a small, elongated stalk, or peduncle, which anchors them to the stylaster coral. The umbrella-shaped body, or medusa, is covered in numerous small, finger-like projections called tentacles, which are used for capturing prey and feeding. The tentacles are lined with tiny, stinging cells called nematocysts, which paralyze and immobilize prey before being drawn into the Medusa's mouth. The various species depicted in this chromolithograph exhibit subtle differences in their morphology and tentacle arrangement. For instance, Zanclea gemmosa and Koellikerina fasciculata have a more compact medusa with shorter tentacles, while Neoturris pileata and Larsonia pterophylla have longer, more slender tentacles. Sarsiella dinema, on the other hand, displays a more elongated medusa with a distinct, pointed tip. This exquisite piece of art is a testament to the intricate beauty and diversity of the marine world, as documented by Ernst Haeckel and Adolf Glitsch over a century ago. It continues to captivate and inspire scientists, artists, and nature enthusiasts alike, highlighting the importance of preserving and understanding the wonders of the natural world.
