EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph by Joseph Strutt, taken from his seminal work "Sports and Pastimes of the People of England," published in 1876 by Chatto and Windus in London, offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of Anglo-Saxon entertainment. The top image depicts an Anglo-Saxon harpist and Hoppestere, or hopping buffoon, from the 10th century. The harpist, with his intricately carved instrument, serenades the Hoppestere, who leaps and hops in a playful and mischievous manner, entertaining the crowd with his antics. Moving on to the middle image, we see Anglo-Saxon men engaged in a lively dance, accompanied by the sounds of trumpets and horns from the 8th century. The men, dressed in traditional garb, leap and twirl in unison, their faces expressing joy and excitement as they celebrate the rhythm of the music. Finally, in the bottom image, we find Anglo-Saxon gleemen, or traveling performers, showcasing their juggling skills, accompanied by a fiddler. The gleemen, known for their storytelling, music, and acrobatics, were an essential part of Anglo-Saxon society, bringing entertainment and joy to communities throughout the land. The juggler, with his skillful manipulation of objects, captivates the audience, while the fiddler sets the tempo for the performance. These images offer a unique window into the past, providing us with a glimpse into the world of Anglo-Saxon entertainment and the various forms of amusement that brought joy and community to the people of the time.
