EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Albany Bottlebrush, Callistemon speciosus, a native Australian tree renowned for its distinctive, bottle-shaped, crimson-colored inflorescences. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Carini and drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is celebrated as one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and exceptional artistic skill. In the background of this image, we can see a human figure, possibly a scientist or explorer, holding a specimen jar and observing the plant closely. The presence of this figure adds a sense of historical context to the illustration and highlights the importance of scientific exploration and documentation during the 19th century. Interestingly, the illustration also includes an intriguing addition – a tapeworm, identified as Taenia asiatica, or the Asian pork tapeworm, coiled around the root of the Albany Bottlebrush. This parasitic worm is not typically associated with this plant species, but its inclusion in the illustration underscores the comprehensive and detailed nature of Jussieu's work. The Albany Bottlebrush is a beloved and iconic Australian native tree, and this stunning illustration serves as a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world, as well as the remarkable achievements of 19th-century scientific exploration and documentation.
