EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the 7th Light Infantry Battalion, Parachute Regiment, gathered around a religious stone memorial opposite Benouville Mairie in Normandy, France. The memorial, which bears the inscription "PAX" at its base, is adorned with a plaque commemorating the Paras. The 7th Battalion was originally planned to reinforce the first arrivals, the men of the 1st Parachute Battalion, led by Major John Howard, at Pegasus Bridge on the night of June 5-6, 1944. However, their drop was disrupted by strong winds, scattering the troops over a wide area. Despite the setback, the battalion was rallied by their Officer Commanding, Lieutenant Colonel Pine-Coffin, who had arrived with the bugler. The image captures the somber mood of the soldiers as they pay their respects to their fallen comrades, their uniforms and equipment bearing the signs of battle. The memorial, with its peaceful and tranquil setting, serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the D-Day landings and the pivotal role the Paras played in securing a foothold for the Allied forces in Europe. The memorial, with its simple yet powerful message of peace, stands as a testament to the bravery and resilience of the soldiers who fought in the 7th Light Infantry Battalion, Parachute Regiment, and serves as a reminder of the price paid for freedom and the enduring bond between the soldiers of the Paras and the people of Normandy.
