EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Kurt Rysbach, a German spy who would become notorious during the interwar period. Born in Courtenay, New Zealand, in 1893, Rysbach later adopted the alias Kurt H. de Rysbach and joined the German military in 1914. He served valiantly during World War I, but after the conflict, he found himself drawn to the world of espionage. In the early 1920s, Rysbach became a key player in Germany's clandestine intelligence network, operating out of Berlin. He was tasked with gathering information on military and political developments in various European countries, particularly in the British Empire. Rysbach's extensive travels and multilingual abilities made him an invaluable asset to German intelligence. The image of Rysbach depicted in this photograph, taken in 1925, shows him in full German military uniform. The serious expression on his face and the steely gaze of his eyes convey a sense of determination and focus. However, beneath this exterior lurked a complex and enigmatic personality. Rysbach was known for his charm and charisma, which he used to win the trust of his targets and extract valuable information from them. Despite his successes, Rysbach's espionage activities eventually came to light. He was arrested by British intelligence in 1927 and was later tried and sentenced to prison. After his release, he continued to work as a spy for various intelligence agencies, including the Soviet Union's NKVD. Rysbach's fascinating life story is a testament to the intrigue and danger of the world of espionage during the interwar period. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of a time when spies walked among us, their true intentions hidden beneath the surface.
