EDITORS COMMENTS
In the stillness of the 1914 night, a mongrel puppy's howl pierced the quiet, awakening his master from his peaceful slumber. The man, clad in pyjamas and slippers, was startled from his dreams by the persistent and upsetting sound. He sat up in bed, rubbing his eyes, as the shadow of the open door cast a green glow across the room. With a sense of curiosity and concern, he picked up a candle from the bedside table and cautiously stepped out into the hallway. The howling continued, growing louder and more insistent as the man approached the source of the disturbance. The mongrel puppy, a mix of various breeds, stood in the dimly lit room, his eyes wide and full of anxiety. His mouth was open in a mournful howl, his body trembling with emotion. The man's heart went out to the lonely creature, and he scooped the puppy into his arms, soothing him with gentle words and tender strokes. The howling subsided, replaced by contented whimpers and licks of gratitude. The man returned to his bedroom, cradling the puppy in his arms, feeling a sense of peace and companionship. He settled back into bed, the candle flickering in the darkness as he closed his eyes, knowing that he was not alone in the world. This moment, captured in an illustrated book from the 1910s, serves as a poignant reminder of the deep connection between humans and their canine companions, a bond that transcends breed and time.
