This exquisite 18th-century portrait captures the enigmatic beauty and charm of Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson, better known as the Marquise de Pompadour. Born in 1721 in Paris, Poisson rose to prominence in the court of King Louis XV of France, becoming his official mistress in 1745. Her influence over the king was significant, and she was instrumental in shaping the cultural and artistic landscape of France during the Rococo period. The Marquise de Pompadour is depicted in this image, created around 1764, in an elegant and refined manner. She wears an intricately embroidered robe, adorned with pearls and diamonds, and her hair is styled in the latest fashion, piled high on her head and held in place with a delicate diadem.
