This historic photograph captures the symbolic moment when Flight Lieutenant K.J. Ryall of the Royal Air Force handed a sack, representing the millionth short ton of supplies to be flown into Berlin during the airlift, to Dr. Klingelhofer, the economic member of the Western Berlin Magistrat, on 18th February 1949. The image is a poignant reminder of the extraordinary feat achieved during the Berlin Airlift, which lasted from April 1948 to May 1949. The airlift was a response to the land blockade imposed by Soviet Union leader, Josef Stalin, who sought to cut off supplies from Western Europe to West Berlin. The British and American governments organized an enormous airlift to supply the city, with the Royal Air Force and the United States Air Force flying in over 200,000 tons of supplies each month.
