Originally part of the Stepney Union, Mile End Old Town gained independence in 1857, leading to the construction of a new workhouse the following year. Designed by the architect William Dobson in a Domestic Tudor style, the workhouse aimed to provide a more humane and less institutional living environment for its residents.
