This evocative photograph captures a moment in the history of mental health care, taken at the Hospital of Sainte-Anne in Paris during the late 19th century. Established in 1854, the Hospital of Sainte-Anne was one of the first institutions in Europe dedicated to the treatment of mental illnesses. At the time, the understanding of mental health and the care of the mentally ill were vastly different from what they are today. The women in this image, dressed in simple, shapeless gowns, are seen gathered in a courtyard, some sitting on benches, others standing or leaning against the walls. Their expressions are varied, some seem lost in thought, others appear resigned or even hopeful. The atmosphere is one of quiet contemplation, with the women seemingly removed from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. The Hospital of Sainte-Anne was renowned for its innovative approaches to mental health care, including the use of occupational therapy, music therapy, and hydrotherapy.
