EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures a historic moment in European royal history: the marriage of King Manuel II of Portugal and Princess Augusta Victoria of Hohenzollern on September 4, 1913, at Sigmaringen Castle in Germany. The image shows the newly crowned King Manuel, dressed in full regalia, leading his radiant bride, Princess Augusta Victoria, towards the church for their wedding ceremony. The young couple's union marked the end of the Portuguese monarchy and the beginning of the First Portuguese Republic. King Manuel II, the last monarch of the Braganza dynasty, was born in Portugal but spent much of his childhood in exile in Germany. Princess Augusta Victoria, a granddaughter of King George I of Greece and Princess of Hohenzollern, was chosen as Manuel's bride following a long period of political instability and unrest in Portugal. The wedding took place at Sigmaringen Castle, the brides' family residence, due to the political climate in Portugal at the time. The wedding ceremony was a grand affair attended by numerous European royals and dignitaries, reflecting the international significance of the event. However, the union was short-lived as the Portuguese Republic was proclaimed just a few months later, on October 5, 1910. King Manuel II and Queen Augusta Victoria were forced into exile, and their marriage remained unrecognized by the Portuguese government. Despite the political turmoil, their union remained strong, and they continued to live together in exile until King Manuel II's death in 1932. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of a significant moment in European royal history, a time of change and uncertainty, and the enduring love between a king and his queen.
