Born in 1772, Sir William Ponsonby was a prominent figure in the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars. He served as a staff officer under the Duke of Wellington and played a crucial role in the Battle of Waterloo. His gallantry and leadership during the conflict earned him the distinction of being knighted a Companion of the Bath (KCB) by King George III. Sir William Ponsonby's military career began in 1787 when he joined the 1st Foot Guards. He rose through the ranks, demonstrating exceptional skill and dedication. In 1805, he was appointed aide-de-camp to the Duke of York, and in 1809, he became aide-de-camp to the Duke of Wellington.
