This evocative photograph captures the jubilant celebrations that took place in Commercial Road, Portsmouth, on the day of the Relief of Mafeking in 1900. The Boer War, which had been raging in South Africa since 1899, had reached a turning point as British forces under the command of General Roberts successfully relieved the besieged town of Mafeking on the 17th of February. The news of the relief reached Portsmouth, a major British naval base, with great excitement. The streets came alive with men and women, who danced, sang, and shouted in rejoicing. The lamp-lit Commercial Road was filled with a carnival-like atmosphere, as people from all walks of life came together to celebrate the victory. Sailors, who had been eagerly awaiting the news, were among the first to join in the festivities. The photograph shows a sea of uplifted faces, some clapping, others waving flags, while others simply revel in the moment.
