EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Ludovic Duke of Lennox, Earl of Newcastle, and Later Duke of Richmond: A Statesman Whose Autograph Merited All the Honours He Received" This evocative portrait captures Ludovic Duke of Lennox, Earl of Newcastle, and later Duke of Richmond, a prominent figure in British history during the early 17th century. Born in 1574, Ludovic was the third son of Matthew Stewart, 4th Earl of Lennox, and Agnes Keith. His impressive career began when he was appointed as a Gentleman of the Bedchamber to King James VI of Scotland in 1588. Ludovic's political ascent continued when he was made the 5th Earl of Mar and 1st Earl of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1600. He served as Lord Chamberlain of Scotland from 1603 to 1605 and later became the English Secretary of State in 1621. In 1623, Ludovic was granted the title Duke of Richmond, making him the first English duke of this name. This historical portrait, dated 1624, showcases Ludovic in his prime, with an air of authority and wisdom. His autograph, which merited him all the honours he received, is a testament to his intelligence and diplomatic skills. The intricate details of his attire, including the ruff collar and lace cuffs, reflect the opulence of the time. Ludovic's political career was marked by his loyalty to King James I and his efforts to maintain peace between Scotland and England. He played a significant role in the negotiations leading to the Treaty of London in 1625, which secured the union of the two crowns. Despite his many accomplishments, Ludovic's life was cut short when he was assassinated in London in 1624, at the age of 50. His legacy, however, continued to shape British history, as he left behind a strong foundation for the union of the Scottish and English crowns. This portrait serves as a poignant reminder of Ludovic's significant contributions to the political landscape of the time.
