This evocative photograph captures Lord Horatio Herbert Kitchener, the British Secretary of State for War during World War I, in full military regalia. Dating from the period between 1914 and 1916, this image showcases Kitchener's stern and resolute demeanor, which made him an effective leader and an iconic figure during the Great War. Kitchener, who was born in 1850, was appointed to his position at the beginning of the war and quickly became known for his ambitious recruitment campaign. His image, which appeared on numerous posters, became synonymous with the call to arms for the British Army. With a goal of enlisting an additional 100,000 soldiers, Kitchener's slogan, "Your Country Needs You," resonated with the British public and helped to swell the ranks of the military.
