This evocative photograph captures the tense moment during the 1859 Livingstone expedition in Africa, as a displeased hippopotamus rams the boat of the famous explorer, Dr. David Livingstone. Livingstone, a Scottish medical missionary and explorer, had been traveling the African continent since 1841, seeking to explore and document the unknown regions of Central Africa. In this image, Livingstone's boat is seen being attacked by a large hippopotamus, its young having been shot by members of the expedition. The hippopotamus, a large, semi-aquatic mammal known for its aggressive behavior when provoked, is a common inhabitant of the African rivers and waterholes. The young hippos, which were likely shot for their ivory teeth and hides, would have been a significant provocation for the protective parent. The event is believed to have occurred around the Sese Seko Sands, near the Congo River in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo.
