Lady Idina Wallace with Hon. Ralph Stuart-Wortley

Lady Idina Wallace, nee Sackville, eldest daughter of Lord de la Warr, and wife of Captain David Euan Wallace of the Household Cavalry. She married him, her first husband, in 1913, but divorced in 1919. Five-times married Idina would gain notoriety as part of the Happy Valley Set when she moved to Kenya in 1924 with her third husband, Josslyn Hay, Earl of Errol. With her serial marriages and reputation for debauched decadence, she inspired the character of The Bolter in Nancy Mitfords novels, The Pursuit of Love and Love in a Cold Climate, Evelyn Waughs Vile Bodies and the character Iris Storm in The Green Hat by Michael Arlen. Pictured in The Tatler walking in Hyde Park with the Hon. Ralph Stuart-Wortley, a brother of Lord Wharncliffe. Date: 1917

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph from 1917, Lady Idina Sackville Wallace, eldest daughter of Lord de la Warr, is seen strolling through Hyde Park in London with Hon. Ralph Stuart-Wortley. At the time, Lady Idina was the wife of Captain David Euan Wallace of the Household Cavalry, whom she had married in 1913. However, their union would end in divorce in 1919. Lady Idina, who would later gain notoriety as part of the infamous "Happy Valley Set" in Kenya, was known for her scandalous serial marriages and decadent lifestyle. Her exploits would inspire the character of The Bolter in Nancy Mitford's novels, The Pursuit of Love and Love in a Cold Climate, as well as Evelyn Waugh's Vile Bodies and the character Iris Storm in Michael Arlen's The Green Hat. The photograph captures Lady Idina in elegant attire, with a stylish hat shielding her from the sun. Her companion, Hon. Ralph Stuart-Wortley, is smartly dressed in his military uniform, reflecting the patriotic spirit of the time as the world was embroiled in the First World War. The image exudes an air of sophistication and refinement, offering a glimpse into the lives of the British elite during the early 20th century. The photograph is a poignant reminder of a bygone era, showcasing the elegance and grace of a woman who would later become synonymous with scandal and debauchery. Despite her controversial later years, this photograph captures Lady Idina in a more innocent and refined moment in her life, as she enjoys a leisurely walk in the heart of London with a respected member of society.
