EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, Lady Dorothie Feilding, later known as Dot Feilding, is seen standing amongst Belgian officers during a bombardment at Alost in September 1914. Born on the 6th of October, 1889, as the daughter of Lord and Lady Denbigh, Dorothie Feilding defied societal norms and expectations by becoming a highly decorated volunteer nurse and ambulance driver on the Western Front during World War I. At a time when women's roles were limited to supporting the war effort from the home front, Lady Feilding's courage and determination saw her become the first woman to be awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field. Her exceptional service did not go unnoticed, and she was also bestowed with the 1914 Star, the Croix de guerre from the French, and the Order of Leopold II from the Belgians for her invaluable contributions to their wounded soldiers. Dressed in her Red Cross uniform, Lady Feilding's unwavering commitment to helping those in need is evident in her resolute expression and posture. The photograph captures a moment of respite amidst the chaos and destruction of war, as she stands confidently amongst her male counterparts, demonstrating that women, too, played a vital role in the history of the First World War. Lady Dorothie Feilding's story is a testament to the indomitable spirit of those who defied convention and braved the dangers of the battlefield to make a difference in the lives of others. This powerful image serves as a reminder of the courage and determination that defined the human spirit during one of the most tumultuous periods in history.
