EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, King Paul I of Greece (third from the left) attends the christening of his daughter, Princess Irene, in Cape Town, South Africa in 1964. The King is seen in regal attire, wearing the Order of the Redeemer, the highest decoration of Greece. Field Marshal Jan Smuts, a prominent South African statesman and military leader, holds the newborn princess as her godfather. The setting of the christening in Cape Town holds significant historical importance. The city was the site of the signing of the Peace of Vereniging in 1902, which ended the Second Boer War and marked the formal annexation of the Boer Republics into the British Empire. This event took place just a few decades before the photograph was taken. King Paul I, born in 1901, ascended the Greek throne in 1947 following the abdication of his father, King George II. He ruled until his own abdication in 1964, making way for his son, Constantine II. Princess Irene, born in 1938, is the eldest child of King Paul I and his wife, Princess Frederica of Hanover. The presence of Field Marshal Smuts at the christening is a testament to the diplomatic relations between Greece and South Africa during this period. Smuts, who served as the Prime Minister of South Africa from 1948 to 1954, played a crucial role in the country's transition from a British dominion to a republic. His involvement in the christening ceremony highlights the close ties between the two nations. This photograph captures a moment of joy and unity, as the royal family and dignitaries come together to celebrate the birth of a new princess in the beautiful setting of Cape Town. The image offers a glimpse into the rich history of both Greece and South Africa, as well as the personal connections between their leaders.
