EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures King George VI in the grand uniform of an Admiral of the Fleet, adorned with his pilots' wings on the sleeve. The image was taken in 1946, following the end of World War II, which saw King George's leadership and dedication to the British Navy proven instrumental in securing victory. King George VI's naval career began in 1893 when he joined the Royal Navy as a cadet. He served in the First World War as a submarine commander, and later became the Prince of Wales and Duke of York before ascending to the throne in 1936 upon the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII. During his reign, King George VI demonstrated his unwavering support for the British Navy, serving as its Admiral from 1936 until his death in 1952. His commitment to the navy was further emphasized by his decision to wear the uniform of an Admiral of the Fleet in his official portraits, including this one. The pilots' wings on the sleeve of his uniform are a testament to his passion for aviation. King George VI earned his wings as an Army Air Corps observer in 1918 and went on to become an experienced pilot and flying instructor. He continued to fly throughout his life, even during World War II, making him the only monarch to have served as both an admiral and a pilot. This photograph encapsulates the spirit of a monarch who dedicated his life to serving his country in the most significant ways possible, both on land and at sea. The combination of his naval and aviation achievements makes King George VI a unique figure in British history, and this image stands as a powerful reminder of his enduring legacy.
