EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the fort of Ali Musjid, a historic landmark situated along the Khyber Pass in Afghanistan. The image transports us back in time to the year 1878, when the area was the center of a significant historical event. The British Mission to Kabul, led by Sir Pierre Louis Napoleón Cavagnari, had been dispatched with the aim of establishing diplomatic relations and securing trade routes with the Emir of Kabul, Sher Ali. However, the mission was met with resistance as Sher Ali saw the British presence as a threat to his sovereignty. In response, he issued an order for the mission to be turned back at the fort of Ali Musjid. The British, led by Cavagnari, arrived at the fort on September 3, 1878, only to find themselves under siege. Despite their initial attempts to negotiate, the situation quickly deteriorated, and the mission was forced to surrender on September 12. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, depicting the fort that played a pivotal role in this historical confrontation. The rugged terrain and imposing fortifications serve as a reminder of the challenges faced by the British during their attempts to expand their influence in the region. The image also underscores the complex political dynamics of the time, as well as the significance of the Khyber Pass as a strategic gateway to Central Asia. The fort of Ali Musjid stands as a testament to the rich history of the Khyber Pass and the complex relationships between the various powers vying for control in the region during the late 19th century.
