EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Plate IV of the Thomas Bankes Bible, published in 1787. The plate depicts the Old Testament patriarch Judah, one of the twelve sons of Jacob and the eponymous ancestor of the tribe of Judah. In this illustration, Judah is shown as a mature and regal figure, with a serious expression and a flowing beard. He is dressed in the traditional garb of the time, with a tunic and a cloak draped over his shoulders. The most striking element of the print is the lion that lies at Judah's feet. According to the biblical account, Judah was identified as the tribe's leader by a sign given by God: a goat was sent to his sons, and they were told to kill it and bring back the goat's carcass with the goat's testicles in their possession. Judah's sons brought back the goat's testicles, which they had hidden in the carcass of a kid goat, thinking they had fulfilled their father's instructions. However, when Judah discovered the deception, he realized that God had given him a sign of his chosenness as the leader of the tribe. The lion at his feet is a symbol of his strength and leadership. The Thomas Bankes Bible is a beautiful and intricately illustrated work, and this plate is a testament to the skill and artistry of the engraver and the printer. The image of Judah with the lion is a powerful and evocative representation of the patriarch's strength, wisdom, and divine appointment as the leader of his tribe.
