This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic figure of Juana (the Mad) of Castile, also known as Juana la Loca, who ruled as Queen of Castile and León from 1504 until her death in 1555. Juana's reign was marked by political instability and personal tragedy, earning her the ominous moniker 'the Mad.' The queen is depicted here wearing a richly adorned dress of blue and red, the colors of the House of Trastamara, to which she belonged. The intricate striped pattern of the fabric adds texture and depth to the image, while the voluminous sleeves and high collar are typical of the sumptuous garments worn by royalty of the time.
