EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image depicts the ancient Roman general, Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus, leading his troops into the sacred city of Jerusalem during the pivotal year of 63 BC. Pompeius, a brilliant military strategist and political figure, had been dispatched by Rome to quell the rebellion of Mithridates VI, King of Pontus, in the eastern provinces. As Pompeius advanced towards Jerusalem, he encountered the formidable resistance of the Hasmonean dynasty, who ruled the city at the time. The Hasmoneans, led by Antipater the Idumaean, had allied themselves with Mithridates in the hope of expanding their own power base. Despite the fierce opposition, Pompeius' troops managed to breach the city walls, and the general himself entered the Temple Mount, the holiest site in Judaism. The occupation of Jerusalem marked a significant turning point in the war against Mithridates, as it allowed Pompeius to secure the eastern provinces for Rome and establish his own authority in the region. The historical significance of this event is immense, as it marked the first time that Roman troops had occupied Jerusalem. The image captures the grandeur and power of the Roman military machine, with Pompeius at its helm. The soldiers, dressed in their gleaming armor, march confidently through the city gates, while the citizens of Jerusalem look on in awe or fear. This print, from Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich history of the ancient world, and the complex political and military dynamics that shaped the Mediterranean world during the late Roman Republic.
