In this ancient image, we witness a pivotal moment in the history of the Israelite kingdoms as Jeroboam, a prominent figure in the Northern Kingdom of Israel, encounters the prophet Ahijah. This meeting, which took place circa 925 BC, is recounted in the Old Testament of the Bible, specifically in the books of I Kings 11:29-40 and 14:1-18. Jeroboam, a native of Zeredah in the tribe of Ephraim, had risen to power as a military commander under King Solomon. However, Solomon's favoritism towards the southern kingdom of Judah and the southern priesthood, as well as his religious idolatry, led Jeroboam to secede and establish his own kingdom in the north. Ahijah, a prophet from Shiloh, was chosen by God to deliver a message to Jeroboam. In this photograph, we see Jeroboam, an older man with a serious expression, being confronted by the prophet Ahijah, who is depicted as a venerable figure with a long flowing beard and a cloak. Ahijah holds a staff in his hand, symbolizing his prophetic authority. Ahijah's message to Jeroboam was one of both warning and confirmation. He informed Jeroboam that he would indeed rule over the ten tribes of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, but that his rule would be marked by idolatry and divine punishment. This prophecy would ultimately come to pass, as Jeroboam established his own religious system in the northern kingdom, leading to the division of the Israelite people and the wrath of God.
