EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment of defeat and humiliation for Jean II Le Bon, also known as Jean II the Good or Jean II the Fair, King of France from 1350 to 1364. The print depicts Jean II, dressed in his royal robes, being led in chains by English soldiers after his capture at the Battle of Poitiers on September 19, 1356. The battle, a significant turning point in the Hundred Years' War, saw the French army, led by King Jean II, being decisively defeated by the English under Edward, the Black Prince. Jean II, who was born in 1319, had ascended to the throne at the age of 12 following the death of his father, Charles IV the Fair. Despite his young age, he proved to be a capable ruler, leading his troops in several victories against the English. However, his reign was marred by financial difficulties and internal strife, which weakened the French military and left them vulnerable to the English assault at Poitiers. The defeat at Poitiers was a devastating blow to the French, and Jean II was taken prisoner. He was eventually taken to England and held in the Tower of London, where he remained until his death in 1364. Despite efforts by his people to secure his release through ransom, Jean II was not freed, marking the end of his reign and the beginning of a new chapter in the Hundred Years' War. This historical print offers a poignant reminder of the fates of kings and the unpredictability of war. Jean II Le Bon, once a powerful and respected ruler, was reduced to a mere prisoner, a symbol of French defeat and English triumph. The image also underscores the significance of the Battle of Poitiers in shaping the course of European history and the complex relationship between France and England.
