This striking image captures the elegant and sophisticated air of Jean Baptiste Lully, a renowned French composer and court musician of the late 17th century. The portrait, dated 1687, depicts Lully in the height of his career, sitting gracefully before an ornate fireplace, his left hand poised on the neck of a violin. His attire is that of a fashionable courtier, complete with a voluminous wig and a long, flowing coat. Born in Florence, Italy, in 1639, Lully was a prolific composer and instrumentalist who rose to prominence at the French court under King Louis XIV. He was a favorite of the monarch, who appointed him as the King's composer in 1661.
