EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print transports us back to the tumultuous year of 1926 in England, during the height of the General Strike. The image depicts a series of significant incidents that unfolded across the country, particularly in the realm of transport and travel. In the bustling crowds of Liverpool Street Station, we see commuters attempting to make their way to work, their faces etched with determination and anxiety. The usual hustle and bustle of the station has given way to a sense of unease, as the looming threat of the strike disrupts the daily routine. Moving northward, we come across the scene of vandalism in Northumberland, where the railway tracks have been sabotaged. Fish-plates and bolts have been removed from the rails, under the restaurant car of the iconic Flying Scotsman. The audacious attempt to wreck the Flying Scotsman, carrying over 300 passengers, is evident in the break in the rails, with the overturned engine and the next coach removed to the side of the line. Amidst the chaos, moments of respite were found. At the Chiswick garage of the London General Omnibus Company (L.G.O.C.), London volunteer bus-drivers, conductors, and other workers found solace in a dance held in the depot during the strike. The image captures the spirit of camaraderie and unity, as the community came together to face the challenges of the time.
