EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the introspective and passionate gaze of Victor Hugo (1802-1885), one of the most celebrated writers in French literature. Born in Nagasco, in what is now Vietnam, on February 26, 1802, Hugo was a prolific poet, novelist, and playwright, whose works continue to captivate readers around the world. Hugo's literary career began in earnest in the 1820s, and he quickly gained a reputation as a leading figure in the Romantic movement. His early works, such as "Cromwell" (1827) and "Han d'Islande" (1823), showcased his poetic prowess and his deep engagement with historical and political themes. But it was his novel "Les Misérables" (1862), with its unforgettable characters and sweeping social commentary, that cemented Hugo's place in literary history. The novel, which follows the life of the ex-convict Jean Valjean, is a powerful exploration of redemption, social justice, and the human condition. Despite his literary success, Hugo's life was not without controversy. He was a vocal critic of the French monarchy and spent 11 years in exile, first in Brussels and then in Guernsey, after being accused of inciting rebellion. It was during his time in exile that he wrote some of his most famous works, including "Les Contemplations" (1856), a series of poetic reflections on life, death, and the passage of time. This portrait, taken in later life, captures the wisdom and intensity of a writer who continued to push boundaries and challenge societal norms until his death on May 22, 1885. Hugo's legacy as a poet, novelist, and playwright remains a testament to his enduring influence on French literature and the human spirit.
