EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving is an exquisite representation of three distinctive waterbirds: the Horned Screamer (Anhima cornuta), Great White Pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus), and Northern Gannet (Morus bassanus). The illustration is taken from the "Dictionnaire de Naturaliste: Omnithologie" (Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology) published in Paris, France, between 1816 and 1830. The work was directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin and engraved by Massard, with the illustration itself being the creation of Jean Gabriel Pretre. Pretre was a renowned painter of natural history, having previously worked at Empress Josephine's zoo. Later in his career, he became the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The meticulous detail and vibrant colors in this engraving are a testament to Pretre's artistic skill and dedication to accurately capturing the natural world. The Horned Screamer is depicted with its distinctive horns and large, red eyes, standing next to a body of water. The Great White Pelican is shown with its distinctive pouch under its beak, while the Northern Gannet is depicted in flight, with its black and white plumage and long, pointed wings spread wide. This engraving is a valuable historical record of these fascinating waterbirds, providing a glimpse into the natural history of the past. The intricate technique of stipple engraving, which involves the application of countless tiny dots of ink to create shading and texture, adds to the beauty and depth of the image.
