Holofernes, from the Story of Judith (circa 1690) This 17th-century print depicts the Old Testament biblical story of Holofernes, as told in the Book of Judith. Holofernes, portrayed here with a regal and intimidating presence, was the powerful Assyrian commander who led the army that besieged the city of Bethulia. Desiring the beautiful Jewish widow Judith for himself, Holofernes invited her to his tent under the pretense of a peace offering. However, Judith had a different plan. Using her wit and charm, Judith lured Holofernes into a trap. She plied him with wine, and as he became intoxicated, she beheaded him in his sleep. The head of Holofernes was then taken by Judith's maidservant, who delivered it to the city gates, allowing the people of Bethulia to celebrate their victory and deliverance. This print, created in the late 1600s, is a visual retelling of this biblical tale. The artist masterfully captures the moment of intrigue and suspense as Judith approaches Holofernes' tent, with the Assyrian commander oblivious to the danger that lurks within. The detailed and ornate clothing, as well as the rich colors and bold lines, transport us back to this time and place.
