The W196, a sleek and powerful machine, was Mercedes-Benz's answer to the dominance of Ferrari in Formula One racing during the 1950s. Herrmann, a British resident and a seasoned competitor, was one of the team's top drivers, and this race was a crucial one for both him and Mercedes.
